Our History

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has a very humble beginning.

There was a need for members of the community to meet together to further their understanding of God. The group was later adopted, as a Sunday School Class, by The First Baptist Church of America. This class became known as the Calvery Mission.

The class continued to meet, and grew in size. Then in May of 1883, it received a charter from the Rhode Island General Assembly, and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was born.

For over 120 years, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has been servicing the community through fellowship, worship, service, prayer, and study.

We are an ethnically and theologically diverse family whose main purpose in gathering is to seek connection to God through fellowship, worship, service, prayer, and study.

Our Mission

To be the compassionate presence of Christ, his embracing arms and his healing hands.

To shout from the rooftops, the healing, cleasing, saving love of God made obvious in Jesus, available to all by his life, death, and resurrection.

To walk amoung the sick, the addicted, the depressed and discouraged as did Jesus, offering a word of hope in the Gospel and the healing of companionship.

To claim and use the Authority of God over all that keeps us separate from God and each other and focused in the path of following Jesus.

To gather a harvest, share the joy of being children of God, and to bring joy to others.

In pursuit of this mission we covenant together to worship and study so as to be blessed, and to followship and service so as to be a blessing.

What We Believe

We believe in one God Our Creator, Jesus, God's Son, our redeemer, and God the Holy Spirit who fills and sustains.

We believe that Jesus' life, death and resurrection made the love of God known on earth and that through belief in and relationship with him we are saved, made whole and united with God as a family.

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, it is our authority in faith and life; and must be studied, interpreted and applied responsibly and in community.

We believe in the priesthood of all believers. All are called to worship, study, and to be faithful disciples and to spread the good news that the Kingdom of God has come near in Jesus. We all work together to be the light of Christ in a darkened world.

We believe in Soul Liberty, that each of us is created by God with the freedom to interpret the Word and to respond to God as we feel led.

We believe in Religious Liberty. We are not here to put other Christians down but to lift Jesus up.

We affirm believer's baptism. Membership to God's family is a choice. Baptism by immersion means as end to the old way of life and the conviction to walk anew in the paths of God.
