Easter at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill, South Dakota

Easter is a perplexing time. The sanctuary is full on Easter morning, but come the next Sunday, there's hardly a soul around. It's difficult to figure out, but happens all over the Christian church in the United States. Be as it may though, the gospel accounts of the resurrection of Christ don't try to explain anything about what happened that Sunday morning after Jesus' crucifixion. And there's no defense of what happened; it's simply a statement of fact. But, that's the foundation on which the faith of the apostles was built: fact. And yet, our human inadequacies cannot limit the glory of God. Easter says to us that human life has become infinitely valuable, because the fact is the Lord is risen!

At Vangen, we continue to interpret the basics of our discipline of faith through the lens of Easter. We see ourselves as a resurrection people, because we've been restored by Christ's death and resurrection. The Spirit is witness to this restoration as the gospel proclaims an advocate will be Christ's witness for us. That we can be sure of.

At Vangen, we continue to reflect on Max Lucado's book, "Fearless," as was recommended by the South Dakota Synod Stewardship Committee only for Lent; but we're continuing on.

At Vangen, we continue to remind ourselves of the importance and necessity of prayer - of not trying to get something "from" God, but because God IS God, and worthy of our prayers of thanks and praise. We're reminded to be confessional - that we don't have all the answers, but that we need to get back to being obedient to God's will and his call of us through our baptisms. So, as we celebrate the season of Easter, we continue to remember the promise of victory over death and the grave by our living, loving God.
