JOY WITH ROY!

Dear Church Family,

Yesterday was a lot of fun.  For those of you who were not in attendance, Janice arranged for us to enjoy a "Country Sunday" in our worship.  Albert Carroll played his big, old stand-up bass.  He was joined by Aaron Ray on guitar, Emily Welshan on fiddle, Terry Welshan on mandolin, Chris Welshan on banjo, and Kyle Rydell on the drums.  We changed our pace back to an earlier day with songs like "I'll Fly Away," "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms," and "Love Lifted Me;" all played with a bit of old-fashioned flavor.  It reminded me of an old-fashioned Sunday that we held years ago in Pennsylvania.  Everyone came dressed in old-time costume.  Even the preacher got into the spirit of things, preaching in bib overalls and wide brim wool hat.  We shut down the organ and piano and replaced them with an old pump organ.  (Our organist was certainly glad when the singing was over.  Her legs were ready to fall off!)

It is important to be creative from time to time in our worship together. It is easy to allow ritual to replace the relationship that God wants us to have with Him. There is nothing in itself wrong with ritual and tradition, but we must never let them substitute for a living vibrant faith. Customs, traditions, and rituals all come and go. What is important and lasting is the bedrock of faith by which we live, move, and have our being. King David challenges us to “sing a new song unto the Lord.” In other words, we should keep our lives and walk with God fresh and new with each day’s experiences. We should look for fresh ways to give thanks and rejoice in the daily blessings of God.

I pray that this week is filled with the wonder of faith, the opportunity of service, and the joy of God’s everlasting love.

In Jesus,

Roy
