CENTURY HOMECOMING CELEBRATION

UPDATE ON MARCH 18TH
HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES
As we approach the 100 year anniversary of the first
worship service held in our Sanctuary, preparation to make this historic event a monumental success has reach a feverish pace. One project that holds particular significance for this occasion is the completion of a history of Lawrenceburg First United Methodist Church in the form of a pictorial time line. Located on the first floor of the Education Building, the Pictorial History will illustrate special events of our church from the founders of
Methodism in 1824 up to the 2012 Sanctuary Centennial Celebration. The ground work is complete, and the artists are now beginning their creative flair. If all goes as planned, the Pictorial History will be completed for the March 18th celebration. Those who have agreed to work on this project are: Bonnie Thigpen, Gracie Henson, Anita Marston, Barbara Edwards, Dee Saliba, Brenda Gardner, Elaine Robertson, Charity Simbeck, Polly Marsh, Janice Bailey, Ken Nelson, Justin Mitchell, Sonny & Beverly Duke.
The Homecoming Celebration also presented a unique opportunity for developing an up-to-date mailing list to include addresses of current and former members and clergy. Armed with a pile of old church directories and a telephone, Anita Johnston was able to produce the information necessary. The next phase was to transform the list into a computer data blank that would print the addresses. This task was given to Jessica Scott and Rev. Alecia Fischer. Toward the end of this week, approximately 400 invitations will be in the mail.
As the invitations arrive, please place them in a special location at home to serve as a reminder of the grand day of our church. In conversation with family and friends during the coming weeks, seek every opportunity possible to reiterate the invitation. In reality, every member of our church is serving on this committee. With everyone’s enthusiasm and God’s blessing this will be truly a blessed event!

For those who currently aren’t working in the daytime and would like to participate in one of the most active ministries at First UMC, you might consider volunteering in the Loaves and Fishes ministry.  The food pantry is open two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  Two volunteers work on those days.  Due to the economy, we are seeing more and more people in the community who need help.  We also give donated coats away.  The food pantry is so busy some days that three people are needed to work.  If you feel you could donate some time to the pantry, please contact Jerry Gibbs or the church office.  Your help is much appreciated.

COMMUNION NOTE-If you know of anyone who cannot
attend church but would like to receive communion at home, in assisted living, or in the nursing home on the first Sunday of every month, please call the church office.

GREETINGS FROM THE WESLEY CLASS

The Wesley Class recently hosted a breakfast for our local Habitat for Humanity as well as the Martin Methodist Choir. We maintain a prayer list in our class and pray for those in need and brighten their day by sending cards. At present, we are studying the Gospel of Matthew. Each week one of our members acts as facilitator for that lesson. If you need a Sunday school home, please come and join the fun.

THE GUILD RUTH-BIBLE STUDY

The Guild/Ruth Bible Study of the First United Methodist Church meets on  the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

We would like to invite any lady in the church who is not already involved in a United Methodist Women’s group.

THE LYDIA CIRCLE

The Lydia Circle is a group of United Methodist Women who meet for fellowship, study, and service. The Circle has recently concluded studies of “World Religions” and “Christian Denominations” but also includes studies of Books of the Bible and of social concerns. Members always work in United Methodist Women activities and fundraisers such as “November Harvest”, yard sales, Swamp John’s, etc. They are active in Pulaski District United Methodist Women meetings and events. The Circle meets on Monday mornings at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Members range in age from 30’s to 80’s. New members are always welcomed.

CHURCH CAMPUS HAPPENINGS!

Have you ever arrived for a meeting on a Tuesday evening and ran into a person that you’ve never seen before at a church function? Have you every graciously replied thank you when a person thanks you for the use for the CLC for a function that you had no clue about? If so, you are most definitely not alone?

The United Methodist faith of “Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors” is evident throughout the entire year on our church campus. Our central location and proximity to the downtown area of Lawrenceburg make our campus convenient to many in our community. Several community organizations use our facilities on a regular basis:

 Lawrence County Junior Auxiliary

 Habitat for Humanity

 Flower Lovers’ Circle

 Master Gardeners

 Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts

P.A.T.H (MTSU foster parent training program

 Relative Care Group

 CASA (Center for Family Development)

 Childcare Resource Group

 LifeCare Family Services

The Shelter and several of its counseling groups including the BAT group

Families of Autistic Children Support Group

Fundraising events are also held in our CLC. Fish fries, spaghetti dinners, and steak dinners have all resulted in assisting families or organizations in need. It is a true blessing to be able to offer beautiful and spacious facilities to our community as part of our local ministries.

GO GREEN WITH UMW

Lawrence County is reaching out for our Recyclable materials. As good stewards of our resources UMW is trying to help. Look at all your plastic containers before you put them in the garbage. A number from 1 to 5 is imprinted, within a triangle, unusually on the bottom of the container. Any container with a number 1 or a number 2 can go in your recycle trash. That includes water bottles, milk bottles, vinegar bottles and detergent bottles, etc. Just look for the numbers before it goes with the recycles. Remove the covers on the bottles, so they go through the crusher easily. At this time glass is not recyclable in Lawrence County so we have to put that in the garbage. Do you shred papers at home? The shredded paper can go in your compost pile or put it directly under your plants as mulch. Unsightly? Cover with a sprinkling of pine needles, chips, or dirt. Each one of us can make a difference. Let it begin with you!

ALTAR FLOWERS

Lists for altar flowers (beginning April 10) have been placed in each Sunday school class. You may sign the list or call the church office. If you sign up, it is your responsibility to remember the date, order the flowers and call the office to tell Terri the information for the bulletin (needed by Thursday each week). The lists go through the end of the 2011 year. If more than one person/family signs up for the same date, we will try to accommodate you by placing two arrangements in the chapel/sanctuary, or give you the closet available date to your chosen one.

NEWS FROM THE ALDERSGATE CLASS

The Aldersgate Sunday school class may be the youngest in church-in spirit. The class, made up of senior couples and singles, enjoys time together on service projects, Bible study and social outings. They recently made their annual donation to local charities, including the Shelter, A Kid’s Place, Spirit of Santa, Santa for Seniors, the Safe and Smart program and East End Kids, for a total of $600. They have recently completed a study of two books by Dr. James Moore on Christian Living and character, and are not studying the regular Adult Bible Study series. Aldersgate welcomes anyone who does not already attend a class to join us.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The prayer shawl ministry meets every Tuesday morning in the Parlor at 10am. We have recently been crocheting children’s throws for a Kid’s place. These will be used to give the children some comfort when they have to talk to authorities or have examinations. This past Sunday we blessed 6 throws and prayer shawls.

Come and join the fellowship with us on Tuesday mornings, bring your crochet hooks or knitting needles, or whatever craft you may be working on and help us bring some warmth and hope to others.
