Kite-Flying Contest Again Meets with Little Wind

The Annual Kite-Flying Contest in the Foshee field below the church contnued its tradition of having little success.  It was a beautiful day (March 28, 2004), but there was little wind and the kites spent most of their time on the ground with an occasional exception.  The adults actually did most of the kite-flying, since the children, especially the boys, quickly grew bored with dragging their kites along the ground and went to play in the creek.

There was some talk of not even bringing the kites next year, but of just having an annual day of play and refreshments in the field, but hope springs eternal and event organizers decided to simply move the event to the 3rd Sunday in March, 2005, in hopes of finding better winds, and it was pointed out that last year's Kite-Flying Contest had to be postponed on the 5th Sunday in March due to a six-inch snow.

The expectant crowd of flyers and spectators gathered at 3:00.

There may have been tension amongst the kite-flyers, but the spectators were enjoying the sun even when there was little flying to be seen.

They tried their best and had the occasional success.

Mike manages to get his kite in the air.

Mark's kite was in the air longer than anyone's.

Grandpaw and Michaela meet with little success.

Uncle Chris was helping Katie with her kite...

until she decided he didn't need her help anymore.

Success!

Occasionally the kites would be flying.

but soon the kite flying was over for the year...
