Guiding Traditional Anglicans In The Franciscan Charism

The Franciscan Order of the Sacred Heart, resurrected under the ensign of the Anglican Church in America, is a traditional family of friars and sisters of the First Order and brothers & sisters of the Third Order Secular.

Our First Order friars and sisters (FSC) follow the customary and Rule of the Third Order Regular, wear a traditional Franciscan habit and take the three traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Third Order Secular brothers and sisters (TFSC) follow their Rule of Life and on special days, wear part of the full habit. The vows that we take challenge us to live a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience to the Church, allowing us to further the work of our founder and patron, St Francis of Assisi, who followed the crucified and risen Savior without question or regret.

As Franciscans in service to the Church we listen to the teachings of Jesus Christ with assurance of God the Father and the Holy Ghost; we listen to God’s teaching in the Church; and we listen to God’s holy people as they speak to us.

The Franciscan lifestyle dictates that we, as pupils of St Francis of Assisi, respond to God’s word by following the example of our patron; we live simply, free of possession and attitudes; dedicated to our brotherhood by answering the mission of the Church; bringing the message of conversion to all we meet in God’s name.

We are committed as Franciscans, on a personal and corporate level, to a life given over to prayer and contemplation; the continuous conversion of our hearts, minds and souls; the revelation of the Lord to the spiritually blind; preaching the message of reconciliation and healing embodied in Christ.

WHERE DO I START?

The first step toward becoming a friar or sister is for you to contact the Vocation Director. Once contact has been made, the Vocation Director will respond with appropriate information and your process of discernment begins.

How do I get ready?

Pre-Postulancy begins with the initial contact with the Vocation Director and prepares you for admission into the Postulancy Program. The length of this stage depends on your individual needs. No one is rushed through the process. You will be given the time and the space you need in which to discern your calling in conjunction with the Vocation Director.

What’s the first stage of formation?

The Postulancy is a program of orientation to Franciscan life and Spirituality.

What happens in Novitiate?

The Novitiate is a time of forming your Franciscan identity and intensifying your prayer life. It marks the formal entrance into the Franciscan Order of the Sacred Heart and culminates in your taking temporary vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience.

What’s Temporary Profession?

As a newly professed friar/sister you will continue to learn about the Franciscan way of life and continue your formal education. What classes you take or which degree programs you enter depends on the type of ministries in which you are called to serve.

What’s The Solemn Profession?

After a minimum of three years of living as a Franciscan in Temporary Profession of Vows, you would make your life commitment by entering into Solemn or Permanent Profession of Vows. This marks the beginning of full, lifelong membership in the Franciscan Order of the Sacred Heart.
