Vestry Elections October 4, 2009 at a Parish Meeting

All confirmed communicants  in good standing are eligible to vote. While you do not need to attend the Parish Meeting, you must be present at one of the weekend services in order to vote.  The persons nominated are Gayle Fuller, Cathy Johnson and Janice Powell.  Brief Biography of each...

GAYLE FULLER: attends the 8am Sunday Service

“The measure of a life is its service.”  This motto of Sam Houston State University, from which I graduated, is also the precept I try to follow in my ministry.   When I attended Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, in the Heights area of Houston, I served in the Altar Guild, on the Vestry, in the Daughters of the King, as an acolyte, lay eucharistic minister, lay reader, intercessor, verger, and in the Choir.  I have also served with the Diocesan Stewardship Committee in the past.  I am currently serving as acolyte, lay eucharistic minister, lay reader, and intercessor.   I will be honored to serve our Holy Comforter family on the Vestry.

CATHY JOHNSON: attends the 10:30am Sunday Service

I have been a member of Holy Comforter for 15 years.  I have made a Cursillo weekend # 162, the best Cursillo ever; and  Joe and I are in an active reunion group with 3 other couples. I am a member of OSL, DOK, and I serve on the Alter Guild. I am active in the youth group as a 2nd adult, and a pie baker for the current fundraiser for baked pumpkin and pecan pies at Thanksgiving.  Yes,  this is a commercial.  Check your pew sheets for details. I have been married to Joe for 37 years, am mother to Amy and Rebecca, and grandmother to Kendall. Currently I am not working, but have worked in expediting, customer service, and as Holy Comforter’s Lay Ministry Coordinator and Secretary.  My passion is the Lord Jesus Christ.  My prayer was “Lord how do I serve your people”, when a friend said, run for Vestry.  I love this church and the people in it, and my heart’s desire is to see this church grow according to God’s will.  Please pray for the candidates that God has chosen for these positions and vote for the persons HE has placed on your heart.  God’s blessing to you and your family.

JANICE POWELL: attends the 6pm Saturday Evening Service “The Gathering”

I appreciate the opportunity to share information about my life with you.  I was blessed to be raised by loving Christian parents.  While I have known Jesus all my life, God really became a part of me when I was in my late thirties.  This is when my life began to turn upside down.  My heavenly Father became my best friend, my counselor, refuge, tower of strength, a strong shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen without judgment. I have been privileged to serve my Lord and Savior in many ways.  These opportunities at church include: Children’s Sunday School Teacher, Young Adult Sunday School Teacher, Women’s Bible Study Leader, Youth Minister, Care Caller Committee Chair, Coffee Hour Co-Chair, Welcome Committee Member, Discovery Host, Altar Guild, Altar Guild Treasurer, Daughters of the King, Daughters of the King Vice President of a chapter, Prayer Team, Lectern, Chalice Bearer, Choir Member, and Praise Team Member.   I answered the call to follow the Master Teacher into education thirty-three years ago.  During this time I have served as a campus administrator for twenty-six years at three schools.  When assigned to these campuses they had academic as well as morale issues.   Each faculty became a praying family and reached the Recognized rating from the State of Texas.  They remain solid to this date.  The Lord bestowed the gifts of administration and leadership on me.  Following His guidance and direction results in success.   In my personal life the Lord has blessed me in too many ways to state here.  The most important of which is a loving Christian husband, David, along with four children…two by birth and two by marriage and four completely adorable grandchildren.  I serve through the Christian Motorcycle Association ministering to bikers and other opportunities.  My chapter honored me by allowing me to serve as Secretary for two years.  I have numerous friends who add volumes to my life.

A Statement of Faith - January 1, 2009

We, the undersigned clergy and laity of the Episcopal Church within the Diocese of Texas contend for the”faith once delivered to the saints” and, as disciples of Christ, believe that we are ever constrained by the plain sense of God’s Written Word.

We proclaim our allegiance to Jesus Christ, who alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life, the Savior of all who call upon Him, and to His Word - the Bible.

We pledge that we will teach, both in doctrine and ethics, only that which is in accord with the Holy Scriptures. We will work to preserve an authentic witness to Jesus Christ and His Gospel in our parish families and communities in which God has most graciously placed us.

We make this statement humbly acknowledging that we are all sinners standing in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness offered through the Cross of Christ.

We affirm our identity with the worldwide Anglican Communion, and we are committed to the development of an Anglican Covenant which affirms these beliefs as called for by ++Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

We look forward to working with our own diocesan bishop, The Rt. Rev. Don Wimberly, and others committed to the same
