Durham Consultation on Hispanic Ministries

"Practical Divinity in a Time of Cultural Xenophobia"

On Thursday, March 13, 2008, Sociedad Wesleyana (The Hispanic Wesleyan Society), presented our first Consultation on Hispanic Ministries. The theme was "Practical Divinity in a Time of Cultural Xenophobia." This is a twist on a good Wesley term popularized by the late Dr. Thomas Langford of Duke Divinity School. We were blessed by five excellent panelists who presented their considerations for employing Wesleyan theology in Hispanic/Latino ministry. Their presentation titles appear in the list below.

Featured panelists:

Dr. Daniel Ramirez, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Religion, Arizona State University
"Missing Voices, Bodies, and Principles in the Immigration Debate"

  • Rev. Gabriel Salguero, PhD (cand), Director of Hispanic Leadership Program Princeton Theological Seminary, NJ; Pastor of Lamb's Church - Manhattan , NY
"Somos Familia: A Postcolonial Response to Cultural Xenophobia"

  • Dr. Mark Wethington, President of The Wesley Heritage Foundation, Durham, NC
"X-raying for Xenophobia: A Matter of Consciousness & Conscience"

  • Dr. Edgardo Colon-Emeric, Director of Hispanic House of Studies, Duke University Divinity School

  • Rev. Josefina "Cookie" Santiago, Director of Hispanic/Latino Ministries, North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, NC  "Practical Childlike Divineness:  The Simple Act of Loving God, Self, and Neighbor"

  • These presentations will be available on DVD for all members who request it. Papers will also be placed online in the near future.

Thanks to the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church and members of Sociedad Wesleyana for their generous financial support. Thanks also to the WTS/SPS and Duke University Divinity School for the generosity of time and space which made possible this consultation.

The Wesley Heritage Foundation is making an appeal to our membership and friends to support a project of Iglesia Metodista de Peru to re-open the Seminario Metodista in Lima, Peru. Our immediate task is re-stocking the theological library.  Books in Spanish and Quechua are a priority, but English language books are also welcome. If you cannot make a cash gift, please consider donating good quality books to the project. You may also consider supporting a seminary student for $3500 USD per year.
