"Larry's Notes"
Larry McCord
Larry McCord  Worship Leader and Chief Musician.

Many stories exist regarding St. Valentine and the history of this holiday, some more “appealing” than others. While I find history fascinating, I prefer to focus on the meaning we attach to this day in American contemporary culture.

This is the day when we are to show our significant others how much they mean to us with some demonstration of our adoration. Though I would not encourage anyone to go far outside their means to exhibit their affection, certainly this is a day when lavish bestowals of love are appropriate.

You may recall a story in the scripture when Jesus sat down to eat in the town of Bethany. Depending on which account you read, this was either the home of a leper or a Pharisee (wouldn’t either of them love to know they were mixed up with the other ?!!), and the woman was either an unknown woman or Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. If this was indeed Mary, how consistent her actions are with what we know of her character. Once again, as in Luke 10, Martha is busy serving everyone and, once again, Mary is focusing her attention on Jesus, pouring a costly ointment known for its intoxicating aroma on the feet of Jesus and wiping his feet with her hair. In all accounts, she was criticized for wasting the ointment in this way. Jesus, obviously touched by her act of love, comes to her defense, reminding those present “me you have not always with you”.

This passage should remind us not only of the importance of pouring out our love for Christ without restraint, but of the importance of showing lavish affection to those who mean so much to us now and may not be with us tomorrow. Don’t ever presume that you will have another opportunity . . . let them know how much you love them today!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Larry
