Have you ever felt left out? We used to use the term "wall flowers" to describe someone who is overlooked at a dance or social event. Perhaps some of you have been at these events and wondered about these folks. Or, could it have been you that felt left out or forgotten? The first night of the recent "Living Faith, Seeking Justice" conference, I arrived late. The only seating left was on the floor against the wall. I stood there during the entire worship service, hearing the Word read and proclaimed. When the time came for communion, all of us without seats were also without bread and wine. We felt left out. Forgotten. Overlooked. Then I spotted a man coming towards us, from a distance of about 30 yards. He had noticed us and decided to bring us the symbols of God's grace. "Body of Christ. Blood of Christ." His name was Chris. This was a very moving experience to be served and to watch him follow the wall line until we were all served. Then something even more notable happened. I saw him return to his table and then, only then, did that table share the remains as their communion. I had a lump in my throat and tears welling up in my eyes. Another lady looked over at me from another table, seeing my tears but not knowing the cause, she too brought me some bread and wine. I took it again, grateful for the grace upon grace. Remarkable!
