WORD for the Week

04 FEB 2007

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith . . . .  Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones . . . .  Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous.      Galatians 6:10; Proverbs 16:24; 1 Peter 3:8

EAR

Does not the ear test words And the mouth taste its food?

He also opens their ear to instruction, And commands that they turn from iniquity.

Hear my prayer, O God; Give ear to the words of my mouth.

Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; And attend to the voice of my supplications.

He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see?

Job 12:11 (cf. 34:3), 36:10; Ps 54:2, 86:6 (cf. 84:8), 94:9 (NKJV)

My 5 year old has selective hearing.  If he doesn’t want to do what is told of him, he doesn’t appear to hear what’s being said.  Sadly, many adults live life in the same manner.  On the other hand, what goes into our mind effects what comes out through our speech and our actions.

We receive information through our 5 senses (touch, smell, taste, sight, and sound).  What does, or does not, enter into our mind is extremely important, as this is how we learn and process life, which also determines how we might respond.

Remember the childhood song, “Oh be careful little eye’s what you see?”  The second verse tells us to “be careful little ears what you hear… for the Father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little ears what you hear.”

What do we hear from day to day?  Do we sit and allow garbage to enter from the television, radio, or other sources of media and so-called entertainment (to include the Movie Theater and video games of graphic and violent content and speech)?  Will God be honored and pleased with the words we hear, the very words which influences the life we live?

You’ve heard the saying, “garbage in, garbage out.”   This world is full of “garbage talk.”  Time we need to turn off the tube, and take the trash out.  After all, just as the song states, “the Father above is looking down in love”... and what will He hear in our presence?

Behold, the LORD'S hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear… (Isaiah 59:1-2 NAS)

In Psalms, we see many times the cry for God to hear a prayer, as seen in the above verses.  Will God want to pay head to my prayers after he hears what I listen to and allow in my thoughts and life?

<<To the chief Musician upon Nehiloth, A Psalm of David.>>

Give ear to my words, O LORD,
consider my meditation.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry,
my King, and my God:
for unto thee will I pray.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning,
O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer
unto thee, and will look up.
(Ps 5:1-3 KJV)

The ear is a valuable member of the body… we should respectfully treat is as such (1 Cor 12:12-27).

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
Sincerely yours,
