I began attending a large congregation when I was in college. I walked into the dark massive sanctuary and I was amazed at the intricate stained glass and the lofty architecture. Everything in the church seemed immense and important.
Yet, when I went there, I felt like I was worshipping alone. Even though I was surrounded by hundreds of people, no one knew my name or even bothered to speak to me.
I wanted to be a part of a church. I wanted to help with Sunday School, bring cookies for the coffee hour, sponsor one of the youth group members, but no one even knew my name.
I would have talked to my minister about my desires, but he seemed much too busy to speak with me. I slowly began to miss Sundays, but no one missed me.
One Sunday morning, I was sitting alone in an empty pew when the offering was being taken. The usher skipped over me, he would not pass me the plate. I guess it was because he assumed that I had nothing to give. I am a pastor now, but I still remember that feeling of being overlooked and invisible in the place where I worhipped.
The members of the First Presbyterian Church in Abbeville treasure this small, yet vital, Christian family.
We invite and encourage every person to participate. This congregation is aware of how much people have to give -- talents, energy, and ideas -- and they are blessed by those gifts. If you are looking for a church home, we invite you to attend First Presbyterian. Your presence will be appreciated!
