Ad/Spy/Mal-ware
The Internet contains literally thousands of different items and programs that can harm your computer system. These alone cause more problems for the average user than everything else combined. They are installed under the radar of most anti-virus programs and bypass the download/install dialogue altogether.
Here are some suggestions on how to deal with this:
4. Use a good pop-up blocker
There are a number of different pop-up blockers available on the Internet, as well as ones you can purchase. There is nothing better than having a good popup blocker built right into your browser. Some modern browsers provide just that. Check with your system requirements and help instructions for more information.
Some examples are shown below:
- Mozilla Firefox - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
- Apple Safari - http://www.apple.com/safari/
Plug-ins also provide adequate defense. The best is provided free by Yahoo. If you do choose to use Yahoo!'s Anti-Spy, remember to periodically run and update it.
- Yahoo! Toolbar with Anti-Spy - http://toolbar.yahoo.com/
- Google Toolbar - http://www.download.com/Google-Toolbar/3000-2379_4-10306581.html
5. Get a good anti-spyware program
Not only do many Internet browsers give you pop-up blockers, but you can find many others as well. The following is a list of some recommended anti-spyware programs. Moreover, they are free!
- Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition

http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html- HijackThis
(Use this as a final effort. Note the icon for this program is a bundle of dynamite, so please use sparingly!)

Anti-virus and anti-spyware definitions should be updated on a daily basis. Other similar programs should be updated weekly. Your operating system should be the first on your priority list for consistent updates.
- Microsoft Windows Update - Critical Updates and Service Packs
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/- Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
(This is an absolute necessity for network administrators!)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspxFor intermediate users, it's also a good idea to check the add/remove programs list periodically to check for anything that may have been missed and remove anything that you do not recognize or need. Just go to your computer's Control Panel under the Start menu, then click on Add/Remove Programs to see what's been happening lately on your computer system.
And lastly, if you're not sure about what is happening on your computer system, ask a technical expert! That's what they are there for.
Until next time...
